Dr. Joseph Owino is a UC Foundation Professor and the Department Head of Civil and Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. Dr. Owino’s research interests are in the areas of structural health monitoring, Non-destructive evaluation of civil engineering materials, Finite Element Modelling (FEM), innovative construction materials and recently Dr. Owino has acquired an interest in transportation infrastructure and data analytics. His research contributions have resulted in over 30 publications in esteemed journals and conference publications and has acquired over $2 million in research funding as a PI or Co-PI to date. Dr. Owino teaches courses in engineering mechanics, structural engineering analysis and design and finite element methods. Dr. Owino is also a visiting professor at CSUST.
Before joining UTC, Dr. Owino worked in industry for over six years both as a design engineer and a project engineer for Shell Oil Company conducting soil exploration for the purposes of the installation of offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, Dr. Owino worked in academia for over ten years as a Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
Dr. Owino is a registered professional engineer in the state of Tennessee and is affiliated with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), ABET PEV evaluator and National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
